Jack D. Sobel, MD
Dr. Jack Sobel is Professor of Internal Medicine, Immunology and Microbiology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne
State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, where he is also Chief of the Division of Infectious
Diseases. Dr. Sobel obtained his medical education at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Subsequently, he undertook residencies in pediatrics, internal medicine, and cardiology at various medical institutions
in South Africa and Israel before completing his training in infectious diseases with postdoctoral fellowships at the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland, and at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel
University College of Medicine) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sobel is the author of over 250 publications. He is Associate Editor of Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and
Gynecology and serves on the editorial boards of Mycology Review, Sexually Transmitted
Infections, and BioMed Central. Dr. Sobel has a special interest in Candida infections of the genitourinary
tract. His research encompasses the microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology of Candida infections. Clinically, his
studies include the diagnosis and treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis and Candida infections of the urinary tract, as well as
the investigation of new antifungal drugs.
