Diagnosis and Rational Therapeutic Selection in the Management of Invasive Mycoses

   1) Clinical Perspectives: Optimal Use of PK/PD in Antifungal Selection
   2) Diagnosis and Management of Endemic and Opportunistic Mycoses

Program Overview

  1. Dr. Richard Drew and Dr. James Lewis discuss the importance of using pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters when choosing an appropriate antifungal agent. Clinically relevant PK/PD differences among the antifungal classes are also reviewed.
  2. Dr. George Sarosi and Dr. Thomas Patterson review the challenges clinicians face in the diagnosis and treatment of endemic and opportunistic fungal infections. The discussion is based on an article authored by Dr. Sarosi titled, “Fungal Infection and Their Treatment in the Intensive Care Unit” that was published in Current Opinion in Critical Care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the needs of pharmacists and all other healthcare professionals who care for and who may be involved in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of invasive fungal infections.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the role of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic characteristics in the selection of antifungal agents for the treatment of invasive fungal infections
  2. Describe recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of invasive fungal infections in the Intensive Care Unit
