   2) Rational Use of Antifungal Prophylaxis in High-Risk Patients

Program Overview

  1. Dr. Thomas Patterson and Dr. James Lewis discuss the latest research on diagnostics, antifungal resistance, treatment strategies, and drug safety presented at the 2007 meetings of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). Insights on the upcoming IDSA guidelines for Candida and Aspergillus infections are also discussed.
  2. Dr. Richard Drew and Dr. John Perfect evaluate clinical study results recently published in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine titled, "Posaconazole vs. Fluconazole or Itraconazole Prophylaxis in Patients with Neutropenia." During the course of their discussion, Dr. Drew and Dr. Perfect discuss the rational use of antifungal prophylaxis in high-risk patients and how patient management may evolve in the coming years due to improved diagnostic techniques.
