Carol A. Kauffman, MD
Dr. Carol Kauffman is Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Chief of the
Infectious Diseases Section at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Kauffman earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan where she subsequently completed a
residency in internal medicine, which was followed by a fellowship in infectious diseases from the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Kauffman is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
She is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the
European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and the International Immunocompromised Host
Society. She is Past-President of the Veterans Affairs Society of Practitioners in Infectious Diseases and the
International Immunocompromised Host Society. She serves on editorial boards in the areas of mycology, infectious
diseases,hospital epidemiology, and geriatrics. She was an active member of the NIH Mycoses Study Group
from 1979 to 2006, serving on the Steering Committee for 15 years. She now serves on the Steering Committee
for the new Mycoses Study Group. Dr. Kauffman’s research interests include treatment of fungal infections and
resistant gram-positive infections, infections in immunocompromised hosts, and prevention and treatment of infections
in older adults. She has authored or co-authored more than 340 book chapters and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
